I wonder if we really understand our brains? Maybe we are simpler animals than we thought. I had an interesting experience sitting beside a dressage judge for a day, writing down her marks and comments as a hundred horses and riders performed in front of us. By the end of the day I could pretty accurately predict what mark she was going to give, but that did not qualify me to be a dressage judge. For that I think I would have to repeat the process with many other judges, doing many different competitions. Does this sound a familiar process? Before that experience I would have said I needed training to understand the principles of judging and how to apply them before starting to judge. Now I wonder.
